Our Story

The name “Dignita” originates from the Latin word “dignitas,” which in Ancient Rome symbolized personal reputation, moral value, and the right to dignity.

The modern concept of “dignity” stems from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, summarized in the principle that every human being has the right to human dignity. Article 1 states that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”

Inspired by this ideal, the foundation was established in 2020 by human rights advocates in Bulgaria with the mission to combat a grave crime that deprives people of freedom and violates their inherent human dignity.
